FAQ

Are your prints archival?

Yes. Our inks are pigment-base archival inks, and our canvas is acid-free. The longevity of our prints is rated at 100 years under normal indoor conditions. Pigment inks will also resist fading (temporarily) in outdoor environments such as art exhibits. However canvas prints are not meant for permanent outdoor exposure. This rule is true for all other giclee printers. Art is for indoors!

What is the difference between " Drymounted and Stretched" vs "stretched only" canvases?

Ever seen a canvas print or oil painting turn saggy or develop ripples after a couple of years, or even sooner? To eliminate this problem we drymount our canvas prints to a sturdy warp-resistant polystyrene board. There is no glue involved as glue may cause bubbles and ripples. Instead we use a vacuum press that permanently mounts the canvas to the board. This process eliminates the possibility of bubbles and ripples. Drymounting is optional but included in the price. If you prefer the traditional stretched-canvas style, that is available. However if your canvas becomes loose at any point, a fee will apply for re-stretching. Why not go the safe way and drymount instead of stretching?

Canvas Semi-gloss, high gloss, brush strokes, Matte. Can you describe these canvas finish types?

Semi-gloss is our most popular finish and is FREE for all canvas plaks, Canvas on Foamboard, and Stretched canvas orders if desired.

High gloss will enhance color depth in some cases, but it will also increase glare.
High gloss coating is 0.50 cents per sq. foot for all canvas prints.

Brush strokes is a glossy coating hand-applied by brush. It is recommended only for giclee painting reproductions where an "oil painting" or heavy brush stroke effect is desired. It is not recommended for photography, portraits in particular. Textured coating is $2 per sq. foot.

The uncoated finish is 100% matte but it is more susceptible to scratching and rubbing. It is only recommended for picture framing, under-glass, or when absolute color flatness is desired.

Do you print on watercolor paper and other types of art paper?

We carry 6 types of art and photo papers. See our pricelist for more details.

Where can I see how the different types of printing materials look like?

You may order a set of samples by mail by contacting us here, the sampler is $10 shipping included.

I want my print to be 100% matte because it is going under glass and I wish to reduce the glare.

We do apply a semi-gloss coating to all canvas prints by default, but it is not a requirement. If you wish for a 100% matte print, select "uncoated" (matte) in the ordering process. Our inks are archival and will resist fading even without the coating, but the coating prevents damage to the canvas, the edges in particular.

I heard that canvases shouldn't be drymounted, is this true?

The norm is that paper should be drymounted, and canvas should be stretched. However, this is only true for art canvas designed for acrylics and oil paints.
Our printable canvas, either poly-cotton or polyester are designed to tolerate a great deal of heat. This canvas allows for a greater variety of applications including drymounting, matting, stretching, and to be put under glass.

What if my size is not listed in the pricelist?

Use this formula to find the price for any size: width x height divided by 144.
Then look up the result under "square footage" column in the pricelist.
Example: a 14 x 34 print. 14 times 34 = 476. 476 divided by 144 = 3.3 Round up 3.3 to 3.5.
Look up 3.5 in the "square footage" column to figure out the price.
